Internal Family Systems Therapy

Understand the parts of you that feel in conflict. Internal Family Systems therapy at Scottsdale Providence offers a compassionate way to explore your emotions, protective patterns, and recovery goals.

What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a form of psychotherapy that uses the idea of inner ‘parts’ to explore different emotions, beliefs, and protective responses. It offers a framework for understanding internal conflict and approaching yourself with greater curiosity and compassion.

At Scottsdale Providence Recovery Center, IFS is one of the therapeutic approaches used to support individualized care. You might recognize a part of you that wants change alongside another that feels afraid, guarded, or unsure. Therapy creates space to understand both responses and consider what you need to move forward.

Understanding Your Inner Experience

The IFS model describes vulnerable parts that carry painful feelings and protective parts that try to keep those feelings manageable. Their responses can sometimes conflict: one may push you to stay in control, while another seeks immediate relief from distress.

IFS also describes the Self, associated with qualities such as calm, curiosity, and compassion. The goal is to change how you relate to your inner experience rather than eliminate parts of yourself. These are concepts within the IFS model, not a diagnosis or a suggestion that you have separate personalities.

Managers, Exiles, and Firefighters

IFS uses three common names for the roles parts may take. Understanding these roles can help you describe patterns that previously felt difficult to explain.

1

Managers

Protective parts that try to prevent distress by managing daily life, emotions, and relationships. They may show up as a strong need to plan, achieve, or stay in control.

2

Exiles

Vulnerable parts associated with painful experiences and feelings such as hurt, fear, or shame. Other parts may work hard to keep these feelings out of awareness.

3

Firefighters

Protective parts that react when distress becomes overwhelming and seek immediate relief. In the IFS model, some substance use or other impulsive coping patterns may be understood through this lens.

What Happens in an IFS Therapy Session?

Sessions involve working with a therapist to notice and explore your responses. You may begin with a current concern, an emotion, or a recurring pattern. Your therapist helps you approach that experience without judgment and understand what it may be protecting.

Tools may include guided imagery, journaling, noticing physical sensations, or mapping the relationships between parts. The pace should account for your readiness and comfort. You can discuss concerns about the process with your therapist rather than feeling pressured to explore painful experiences before you are ready.

How IFS Fits Into Mental Health and Addiction Care

IFS can offer a way to discuss shame, internal conflict, and patterns of coping within a broader treatment plan. At Scottsdale Providence, the choice of therapy depends on your needs and goals. When mental health concerns and substance use overlap, learn how our dual diagnosis treatment brings those concerns into one coordinated plan. Your team can explain the role of IFS and other approaches in your care.

What Does the Research Say About IFS?

IFS has an emerging research base. Early studies suggest potential benefits, but the evidence remains limited and larger studies are needed for specific conditions. The IFS Institute’s research overview describes these limitations. Your clinician can help you understand the evidence and consider which approaches fit your situation.

Is IFS the Same as Family Therapy?

No. ‘Internal family’ refers to the relationships among your inner parts. IFS can be used in individual therapy; family members do not need to attend for that work to take place. Family therapy focuses on relationships and interactions between people. The approaches may complement one another when appropriate to your treatment plan.
