What Is Family Therapy?

Support for the Relationships Recovery Depends On

Family therapy at Scottsdale Providence is grounded in the belief that a family operates as a system of interconnected parts. When one part is disrupted by mental illness or addiction, every other part can feel the impact.

This work helps families address the shifts in trust, responsibilities, communication, and emotional safety that can occur under the strain of behavioral health disorders. The goal is not only individual recovery, but a healthier family environment around that recovery.

Family as a System

When one part of a family is disrupted by mental illness or addiction, the effects are often felt throughout the entire system.

Shared Healing

Family therapy helps recovery extend beyond the individual by addressing trust, responsibilities, communication, and old patterns.

Ongoing Support

Families receive guidance so they can stay connected, informed, and better prepared to support change after treatment.

How Sessions Work

Therapy Built Around the Needs of Each Family

Families do not all look the same, and they do not all need the same type of support. The primary therapist helps determine when family engagement is clinically appropriate and which approach best serves the client and family.

Clarify Who Should Be Involved

Rather than prescribing who should participate, therapists help identify the loved ones and supports most relevant to the person's treatment.

Begin When Clinically Appropriate

Family sessions may begin once the primary therapist determines the client is stable enough for direct family engagement.

Work Through Real Dynamics

Sessions create space for communication, accountability, boundaries, and the repair work needed after strain from symptoms or substance use.

Stay Connected Over Time

SPRC also supports families through ongoing education and a monthly Zoom family support group.

Who Can Benefit?

Family Means the People Who Matter Most

Any family navigating the challenges of mental illness or addiction can benefit from therapy services. Scottsdale Providence recognizes family broadly: parents, siblings, partners, close friends, or anyone with a close and enduring emotional connection to the client.

Family sessions can help loved ones understand what has happened, name what needs to change, and begin creating healthier ways to communicate and support recovery.

Monthly Family Support

SPRC offers a monthly Zoom family support group for family members of current clients and alumni who remain active in the community.

Parents, Siblings, and Partners

Family therapy can include the people who are closest to the client and most affected by the recovery process.

Chosen Family and Close Friends

Family can mean any group of people with close, enduring emotional ties, including trusted friends and supports.

IFS-Informed Therapy

Therapists may use Internal Family Systems and other modalities to match the family's needs and treatment goals.

Empowering Families

Build a Stronger Support System for Recovery

Family therapy helps address the complex dynamics of mental illness and addiction so families can move forward with more clarity, connection, and hope.

SPRC changed my life completely! The staff is incredibly caring and they really do want to help people not only get sober but actually recover. I’ve been to treatment centers before and they just wanted my money. This place isn’t like that and it’s worth every penny. As scared as I was to enter treatment again, I’m so glad I did and I would highly recommend this center for anyone struggling with addiction and/or mental health!

My experience at Scottsdale Providence was amazing. I wasn’t sure what treatment would be like or what to expect but the staff has been beyond amazing and helpful throughout my journey. They offer many tools to help out through recovery process. I started out at the residential house first and the staff there is awesome, extremely helpful, and very well educated. They have group therapy sessions that I found to be extremely helpful and have helped me out a lot with my social anxiety. I then moved to the PHP house which was also another awesome experience for me. The PHP program was also extremely beneficial and involves a more work like schedule to help with adjusting back into the real world. Both houses were a great opportunity to get to know the staff on a bit of a personal level and build relationships with other clients as well. The fellowship I have gained in treatment is just one of the many things that makes me want to continue on with my sobriety. I have built relationships that I truly believe will last a lifetime. I am beyond thankful to the staff at the houses and at the center as well.

Scottsdale Providence had a huge impact on the wellbeing of my mental health. They have BHT’s, clinical staff, doctors, and case managers at every level of care with a deep working knowledge on mental health and substance abuse disorders. Beyond being a health care facility, they care for each of their patients and present them with healthy challenge towards their old ways of thinking and living. Two weeks after my discharge, clinical staff and BHT’s are still looking after my wellness and encouraging me from afar. I highly recommend Scottsdale Providence. The housing is beautiful, the staff deeply cares, and the experience is life-changing.

Scottsdale Providence changed my whole life. I walked in completely broken, drinking and using to survive, carrying years of trauma and pain I didn’t even know how to set down. I didn’t know what I needed. I just knew I couldn’t keep living the way I was bc it was killing me. From the second I got there, the staff saw me in a way nobody ever has. They understood me. They didn’t judge me. Everything they do has intention. Nothing is random. There is rhyme and reason behind every group, every boundary, every tough conversation, and every moment they push you to sit with yourself instead of running. And honestly, the people you meet here… they’re a huge part of the healing. The patients are amazing bc the staff creates a space where everyone feels safe and connected. You end up being transparent in ways you never have before. You hear everyone’s truth. You share yours. You feel seen and less alone. That kind of honesty changes you. Most of the staff are addicts in recovery too, with years and years of sobriety. That makes such a difference. They don’t talk at you. They talk with you. They get the addict mind. They understand the shame, the fear, the spiraling, the survival mode. They know what it feels like to want to quit and still feel pulled back in. You just feel understood on a soul level. They didn’t just help me stop drinking and using. They helped me understand why I did it. They got to the root emotionally, physically, and spiritually. They taught me tools I actually use every single day. They challenged me when I wanted to shut down. They held space for me when I couldn’t catch my breath. Not once did I feel judged. I felt guided. I felt held. I felt like my life actually mattered. Scottsdale Providence didn’t just help me get sober. They gave me my life back. They gave my kids their mom back. They helped me find myself again. If you’re scared or feel like there’s no way out, I’m telling you from my own heart, this place is real. This is where healing actually happens. I’m forever grateful.
