Treatment Modalities: What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a gentle, body centered therapy that helps people recover from trauma and chronic stress by working with the nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, this approach focuses on releasing survival responses that remain stuck in the body after overwhelming experiences.
Rather than relying only on talking through events, SE helps individuals become aware of physical sensations connected to traumatic memory. By working at a slow and manageable pace, the body is able to process stress in a way that supports long term regulation and healing.
What is Somatic Experiencing and How Does It Work?
When someone experiences trauma, the nervous system activates survival responses such as fight, flight, or freeze. In many cases, that response does not fully resolve, which can lead to traumatic stress disorders and ongoing symptoms.
These may include:
- Anxiety or hypervigilance
- Emotional numbness or disconnection
- Chronic muscle tension or unexplained pain
- Difficulty sleeping or relaxing
Somatic Experiencing helps the body safely complete these survival responses. Through guided awareness of sensation, movement, and breath, the nervous system learns that the threat has passed. Over time, this process can reduce symptoms associated with post traumatic stress disorder and improve overall quality of life.
Semantic terms added naturally:
- traumatic memory
- traumatic experiences
- traumatic stress disorders
- post traumatic stress disorder PTSD
- quality of life
- somatic therapy
What to Expect in a Somatic Experiencing Session
Sessions focus on present moment awareness rather than reliving past events. A trained provider helps guide attention toward subtle physical cues while maintaining a sense of safety.
Clients may be guided to:
- Notice sensations such as tightness, warmth, or changes in breathing
- Observe how the body responds to emotions or thoughts
- Release stored survival energy gradually, without overwhelm
Sessions are individualized and paced according to each person’s nervous system capacity.
Why Somatic Experiencing May Be Helpful
Trauma often lives in the body, not just in memory. This approach is especially useful for people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected despite traditional therapy.
Somatic Experiencing may support individuals dealing with:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Chronic anxiety or emotional overwhelm
- Physical symptoms linked to unresolved stress
Because it works with the nervous system directly, many people find it more tolerable and sustainable than approaches that rely heavily on verbal processing.
