May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

In the US, nearly 1 in 5 adults live with mental illness, and according to researchers, almost two-thirds of those affected never seek help. This May, we are honoring national Mental Health Awareness Month to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those experiencing anxiety, depression, and other disorders so they can find the help they need. (Read our article on managing co-occuring disorders here!)

May mental healthMental health afflictions are far more common than most realize. In the United States, nearly 20%—or 43.8 million people—have experienced some form of mental illness, including conditions such as anxiety, schizophrenia, substance abuse, eating, mood, and personality disorders. When left untreated, the results can be catastrophic—untreated mental illness increases the risk of homelessness, substance use disorders, legal issues, and suicide.

At Scottsdale Providence, we are committed to helping reduce the stigma, educating the public, and offering support to those facing mental health issues. We believe it is critical for people to know they are not alone and that it’s ok to not be ok. We believe that through offering support, resources, and community, healing can happen and people can find the care they need to flourish.

Daniel Nichols, Clinical Director and Co-Founder, shares our philosophy, built on decades of experience treating behavioral health and substance abuse issues:

“Most of our clients coming for general mental health are feeling hopeless because they seem to be struggling and they haven’t been able to get out of it. Typically our program is 90 days long, but we will work with individuals according to individual needs. And yeah – we are going to help you, but we are also going to challenge you and push you to recover. We strive for change – that’s what we want, that’s our goal—change.”

Our therapists work with each client to identify their treatment goals and develop a program that best fits their needs. Our comprehensive approach includes individual and group therapy and compassionate psychiatric care. Our expert treatment team blends CBT, Motivational Interviewing, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, EMDR, Neurofeedback, and Occupational Therapy to promote lasting recovery. Psychiatric care, case management, discharge planning, acupuncture, yoga, and fitness all make up a truly comprehensive treatment experience.

Daniel continues: “To see someone come in broken and not only leave in a better place, but still be doing well six months later. If the person does the work, they will get progress. And it is our job to show them what that work is and how to do it, from caring professionals.”

What Our Clients are Saying

“I specifically chose Scottsdale Providence because I was really trying to find a place that would give me the help I needed for my mental health. Here they were more authentic. Not only were they professionals, but they cared about me as a person. The people I talk to made me feel calm, the schedule was tailored to my needs, and I had a counselor that was specific to mental health.”

“I have better boundaries that I didn’t have before. I didn’t even know what boundaries were—knowing how to say no instead of doing everything everyone expects of me. I don’t have panic attacks three times a day that are so debilitating! I actually enjoy being out and around people. A lot has changed. This saved my life.”

Alex Porter, Chief Operations Officer, offers his insights on why our program is so successful: “One of the things we really pride ourselves on is individualized treatment. That looks like 30+ hours of therapy a week, individualized sessions ranging from traditional therapy, to EMDR, SE, and Neurofeedback, with ongoing med management and/or psychiatric evaluation. We constantly ask ‘How can we best address the issues for this client in the time that we have them?’ And they begin to realize, ‘Not only am I not alone, but treatment is available— treatment that is effective and can actually help change my life?!’ That’s the goal.”

Alex continues – “I think a lot of times, people think ‘I’m the only one suffering’ or ‘There is no help available.’ People don’t know where to start. A lot of people out there are either hesitant or unaware that treatment is available because there hasn’t been enough focus put on it. Often there are a lot of questions, uncertainty, and fear – which is natural, but it doesn’t really need to be that difficult. There really is help available.“
