Does Rehab Work?

Does Rehab Work?

As Shawn took a seat on his first day of treatment, the group counselor stood up and issued a dire warning:

“Look to your left.
Now look to your right.
According to the statistics, two of you won’t make it.”

Does rehab work? Shawn asked himself that as well.

In Shawn’s case, it was true. Five years later, and the person who sat to his right has died, and the other has been missing for years.

The success rates for successful, long-term recovery from addiction and substance use disorder are grim. Between 40 to 60 percent of people who’ve been treated for addiction or alcoholism relapse within a year, according to a 2014 study in JAMA. Indeed, overdoses have become the number one cause of injury-related death in the US, killing an average of 44,000 people annually, according to statistics.

Among the medical community, there is broad agreement over the need for treatment, but serious divisions over its efficacy and success rates. There is no standard definition for “rehab” and centers vary widely in their approach and methodology. For people trying to recover, or families worried about a loved one, these uncertainties can be terrifying.

Finding a trusted treatment facility with a good rate of success can make the difference between life and death.

At Scottsdale Providence, families often ask us “will my loved one stay sober?” or “how successful is your program?” To answer that very question, we have undertaken the collection of robust outcome data for the past three years.

Does Rehab Work?

We are honored to report that even our preliminary data suggests a notably higher-than-average success rate. Take the numbers:

A 2017 report from SAMHSA shows a 35.9 percent average treatment completion rate among adults in outpatient treatment for a substance use disorder. We are proud to say that 63 percent of our first 300 clients successfully graduated from our treatment program.

Additionally, 75% of those alumni have achieved a minimum of 6 months of abstinence from alcohol and all mind-altering substances. That means patients who come to Scottsdale Providence are challenged, held accountable and required to do the work necessary to transform their lives. And it works.

And although these numbers are immensely powerful, we know there is more to the story. So often, when a life is ravaged by addiction, substance use, or behavioral health issues, the consequences are vast and wide-ranging. More than just getting high or acting out, the sufferer is often unable to show up to their family, attend to responsibilities, or be engaged in their community.

At Scottsdale Providence, we are proud to say we take a holistic approach and treat the whole person. More than just treating addiction, we offer our clients a tool kit for living that gets them back on the road to happy, well-adjusted lives. What’s more, we know that this healing journey has a ripple effect, and impacts families, workplaces and entire communities.

That’s why families choose us.

We bring a combined 120 years of experience in the treatment industry and have helped countless people on the road to lasting recovery. We are more than clinicians, case managers, and counselors. Each member of our team shares an abiding commitment to every client that comes through our door. At Scottsdale Providence, our work is motivated by a genuine desire to connect people with real solutions – so they can live the lives they’ve always wanted.
