Red Ribbon Week 2024: A Commitment to Drug Prevention

Red Ribbon Week 2024: A Commitment to Drug Prevention

Red Ribbon Week 2024 is the largest drug prevention campaign in the United States, running from October 23-31. This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œLife is a Movie, Film Drug-Free,โ€ encourages individuals to make healthy choices and live drug-free. Red Ribbon Week, created to honor DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, now inspires millions across the country to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use and the importance of prevention.

The History of Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 to honor Enrique โ€œKikiโ€ Camarena, a DEA agent who tragically lost his life fighting against drug cartels. The red ribbon became a national symbol of drug prevention and has since grown into the largest drug prevention campaign in the U.S., with participation from schools, communities, and families nationwide.

Red Ribbon Week 2024 Events and Highlights

This yearโ€™s National Red Ribbon Rally will feature a special video from DEA Administrator Anne Milgram, performances, and the premiere of the โ€œNo Second Chanceโ€ fentanyl PSA from students in Tempe, Arizona. There will also be a Red Ribbon Pledge and the announcement of the winners of the DEAโ€™s 2024 Community Drug Prevention Awards and Visual Arts Contest.

Beyond national events, local communities like Fountain Hills, Arizona will be hosting a variety of activities. Fountain Hills students will participate in door decorating contests, the Pledge Wall, and an Awareness Walk. The PSA Video Contest encourages high school students to create 30-second videos based on this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œLife is a Movie, Film Drug-Free,โ€ for a chance to win up to $500.

Additionally, students from Fountain Hills will participate in the Plant the Promise event, where they will plant tulip bulbs that bloom in April to symbolize the commitment to live drug-free. An Educational Health Fair will provide resources for students, parents, and guardians from organizations like the DEA, Maricopa County Sheriffโ€™s Office, and local community groups.

Why Red Ribbon Week Matters

Red Ribbon Week plays a critical role in raising awareness about the dangers of drug use and promoting healthier, drug-free lifestyles. With the support of initiatives like President Bidenโ€™s designation of October as National Youth Substance Use Prevention Month, Red Ribbon Week continues to be a driving force for educating young people and families about the importance of drug prevention.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œLife is a Movie, Film Drug-Free,โ€ empowers students to be the directors of their own lives, making positive choices that shape a healthier future.
